Background of the Study
The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted traditional educational methods worldwide, leading to a rapid shift toward remote and online learning (Olamide et al., 2023). In Nigeria, the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) embraced remote learning to continue nursing education during the pandemic. Remote learning, which relies on digital platforms for the delivery of lectures, assignments, and interactions, was initially viewed as a temporary solution to ensure the continuity of education during lockdowns (Abdullahi & Sambo, 2024). However, the long-term effectiveness of remote learning for nursing education has become a point of debate, especially in a profession that traditionally emphasizes practical skills and face-to-face interactions in clinical settings.
While remote learning offers flexibility and accessibility, it may not fully replicate the experiential learning opportunities provided by in-person clinical training (Olajide et al., 2024). Nursing students, who must acquire both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, may face challenges in adapting to remote learning environments, especially in areas such as patient care, clinical procedures, and direct supervision (Ajayi & Olamide, 2023). Furthermore, factors such as inadequate internet access, limited technical skills, and the lack of hands-on experience may hinder the effectiveness of remote learning in nursing education (Oluwaseun et al., 2023).
This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of remote learning for nursing education at the National Open University of Nigeria, Abuja, during the pandemic. By assessing the challenges and benefits of remote learning in nursing education, the study aims to provide insights into how remote learning can be improved for future use in nursing programs.
Statement of the Problem
While remote learning became a necessity during the COVID-19 pandemic, there is limited research on its effectiveness in nursing education. The transition to remote learning posed unique challenges for nursing students at the National Open University of Nigeria, Abuja, due to the practical nature of the curriculum. The lack of in-person clinical exposure, technical difficulties, and the challenges of adapting to digital learning platforms may have affected students’ learning outcomes. This study seeks to evaluate how effective remote learning was for nursing students during the pandemic and to identify strategies for improving future remote learning programs.
Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate the effectiveness of remote learning in nursing education during the COVID-19 pandemic at the National Open University of Nigeria, Abuja.
2. To identify the challenges faced by nursing students in adapting to remote learning during the pandemic.
3. To propose recommendations for improving remote learning in nursing education in the future.
Research Questions
1. How effective was remote learning in delivering nursing education at the National Open University of Nigeria, Abuja, during the COVID-19 pandemic?
2. What challenges did nursing students face while engaging in remote learning during the pandemic?
3. What strategies can be implemented to improve remote learning for nursing students in the future?
Research Hypotheses
1. Remote learning during the pandemic had a significant impact on the academic performance of nursing students at the National Open University of Nigeria, Abuja.
2. Students who had access to better technological resources experienced fewer challenges in adapting to remote learning.
3. The lack of clinical practice during remote learning negatively impacted the development of clinical skills among nursing students.
Scope and Limitations of the Study This study will focus on nursing students at the National Open University of Nigeria, Abuja, during the COVID-19 pandemic. It will evaluate the challenges and effectiveness of remote learning in the nursing program. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported data and the inability to assess long-term impacts on students' clinical competence.
Definitions of Terms
• Remote Learning: A form of education where students engage with instructional content through online platforms rather than in-person classroom settings (Olamide et al., 2023).
